Sliding Scale for A La Carte Services
Our offerings are available on a sliding scale. Please consider carefully where your organization might fall on the sliding scale. There are some helpful guidelines at “The Sliding Scale: A Tool of Economic Justice” by Alexis J. Cunningfolk. While Cunningfolk’s descriptions are geared toward individual people’s economic circumstances, we have revised our descriptions below to address your organization or company’s place:
The highest dollar cost (sustainer tier) reflects the true cost of our offering. This is the cost we would charge all organizations if we were not using a sliding scale. Your organization is likely financially privileged and able to afford the true cost if:
- your organization has steady, stable, and/or increasing revenues, especially (but not only) if itis a for-profit corporation,
- your organization owns assets, property, an endowment, or investments, your organization owns or leases office spaces in multiple locations, your organization is able to pay competitive salaries and offer full benefits to multiple employees, and
- your organization can regularly pay for guest speakers, trainers, or consultants at their usual rates.
The middle cost tier (solidarity tier) acknowledges that some organizations cannot afford the full cost, but still have access to some economic resources and privilege. This tier allows organizations to pay less than the full cost when they truly cannot afford it. Yourorganization likely falls into this tier if:
- your organization is a nonprofit organization or a brand-new startup without a significant investment,
- your organization has revenues that are mostly steady and stable, but are regularly stretched thin to cover salaries, operating costs, and any applicable payments to directly impacted community members, your organization is able to pay salaries and wages to employees, though the salaries and wages may be lower than industry averages, and
- your organization is unable to receive grants, stipends, or other payment from other organizations/entities that could subsidize payment to guest speakers, trainers, or consultants.
The bottom dollar cost (community tier) acknowledges that some people, groups, andorganizations face significant economic deprivation, exploitation, and lack of resources, but stilldeserve to access educational offerings. Your organization likely falls into this tier if:
- your organization is a nonprofit organization, with or without 501(c)(3) tax- exempt status,
- your organization lacks steady or stable revenues, and regularly struggles to cover basic operational costs, your organization has few to no employees, and struggles to pay salaries or wages, or can only offer small stipends for contractual work but no regular payment for regular work, and
- your organization is led entirely or mostly by directly impacted community members who are mostly working-class or low-income.
If the rates in the bottom tier still present a barrier to your organization, please reach out to us, and we can discuss strategies for partnerships, payment plans, or other options to make it possible for us to work together. In rare cases, we may agree to provide services pro bono as a donation to the organization.
